University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR)

Animal care over this period will ensure that each research animal is cared for humanely at all times. Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Care groups, including the Husbandry Managers and Supervisors, are defined as essential personnel. Service groups who do not need to be on the Penn campus will be remotely performing tasks as directed by their supervisors and can be reached by email. If ULAR’s staffing levels drop, we have plans that allow us to scale back care in ways that will minimally affect animal welfare. If we reach a point where regular ULAR staff cannot keep up with animal care needs, we will use a coordinated plan to ask for help with husbandry care from the scientists whose research utilizes animals. Managers or Supervisors will be present in vivaria and will continue to serve as a point of contact in the animal facilities. Veterinarians and members of leadership will remain available by email and cellphones. Veterinary care services will be provided continuously by the regularly assigned veterinary staff. If you need to reach veterinarians or veterinary technicians, call (215) 573-9952 for animal health issues from 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM. After hours (from 4:30 PM to 7:30 AM), please call (215) 898-3152 and ask the emergency desk to contact the on-call ULAR veterinarian. The ULAR website has contact emails and phone numbers should you need to reach members of ULAR.
